Miller, Miller & Canby Sponsors Maryland Public Service Project

Miller, Miller & Canby has demonstrated its commitment to public service and the environment by becoming a Silver-level sponsor of the "Heroes on the Half Shell" project of the Maryland State Bar Association's Leadership Academy. The one-of-a-kind project focuses on awareness and education of the important role oysters play in the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Oysters act as an important filter, extracting particles and algae and flushing water back into the bay. Some interesting facts that demonstrate the importance of oysters: one oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day, and, when oysters were plentiful 100 years ago the entire Bay cold be filtered in a few days. Now, it takes a year.

Miller, Miller & Canby is a sponsor of the project, which has two components. First, it includes the development of an innovative display at the Maryland Science Center–which enjoys 400,000 visitors per year–which will educate visitors as to the role oysters play and how they may contribute to restoration of the oyster population in the Bay. The Science Center display was unveiled on May 15, 2013. All 200 children participating in the project, as well as many of the sponsors of the project, were in attendance. Speakers included Van Reiner, CEO of the Science Center and Neil Duke, Chair of the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners.
