Montgomery County

Summit Avenue Extension Project (from Plyers Mill Road to Farragut Road)

2019.12.06  The County is continuing to work to complete this project’s 35% design. The County anticipates completing the 35% design by June 2020. The surveys and soil analysis performed during the 35% design process will help the County develop a more robust and reliable budget estimate. At this time, right-of-way acquisition is not anticipated until 2022 at the earliest. The County plans to hold its next public meeting in Spring or early-Summer 2020.

2019.08.09  The County has continued work to refine the design of the project, including incorporating feedback from last fall’s public outreach.  The approved plan will extend Summit Avenue approximately 1,350 feet, connecting it down to Connecticut Avenue and University Boulevard via Farragut Avenue.

The County is actively performing detailed surveys and soil testing, and an additional traffic study is underway – the results of which will help refine the design.  Upon completion of the 35% design, the project will be a candidate for approval for funding of final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction as part of the County’s Capital Improvement Program.

2018.10.29  At a meeting held on October 11th the County Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee (T&E Committee) approved and funded the 35% design of the Montgomery County Planning Board’s recommended preferred alternative (L1).  The approved plan extends Summit Avenue approximately 1,350 feet, connecting it down to Connecticut Avenue and University Boulevard via Farragut Avenue.

Design of the project will continue for another year or more and will include public meeting(s) and outreach by the County to impacted landowners such as you, aimed in part toward mitigating property takings and other potential impacts to the extent possible.  The goal of the design process is to refine the extent of the required property acquisitions and overall project cost. At that point the project will be submitted back to the County for funding of final design, property acquisition and construction.

2018.09.17  A Montgomery County Planning Board meeting was held on September 6, 2018 where the County Department of Transportation’s project team presented its Planning Study findings and recommendations. The Planning Board announced its preference for alternative (L1), which will extend Summit Avenue approximately 1,350 feet, connecting it down to Connecticut Avenue and University Boulevard via Farragut Avenue.

On October 11, 2018 the Planning Board will present its preferred alternative to the County Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee, which will have final approval to move the project into its 35% design phase, which is already funded.

2017.07.07  This Project will extend the existing Summit Avenue from Plyers Mill Road to the intersection of Connecticut Avenue (MD 185) and University Boulevard (MD 193) via Farragut Avenue over approximately 1,350 feet of length.  The project will also widen the existing bridge over the CSX Railroad. The project is currently in the preliminary design phase, where the State is choosing among three project alternatives.
