Miller, Miller & Canby attorneys Joe Suntum and Ben Schneider presented at the 2026 American Law Institute (ALI) Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Conference in Savannah, Georgia in January.

For more than four decades this ALI event has been the premier national gathering for eminent domain lawyers and related professionals. The conference is a valuable learning and networking platform for land use, zoning and real estate lawyers, particularly those involved in eminent domain disputes, as well as constitutional law enthusiasts and municipal/local government lawyers.  This year’s programming did not disappoint, with a diverse range of speakers from both private and public practice.

Joe Suntum’s presentation, Bad to Worse: Dealing with Condemnations That Exacerbate Pre-existing Conditions, covered a landmark eminent domain jury trial in which he and his colleagues at Miller, Miller & Canby prevailed for their clients. The complex matter involved condemnation of residential property for a county airport; the original offer in the case was $268,500; after trial the jury awarded full just compensation of $3.5 million for the landowners.

Ben Schneider’s presentation, Defending the Taking: Condemnor Strategies in Eminent Domain Cases, covered condemnation issues from the condemnor’s perspective. His talk was based on his years of experience prosecuting eminent domain acquisitions for the United States Department of Justice, with cases ranging in size from .2 acres to 538 acres and in value from $20,000 to more than $100 million.

Miller, Miller & Canby attorneys have a long history of protecting client rights when their property interests are threatened, or taken, by governmental authorities for public use.
