Michael Campbell is a partner in the litigation department of Miller, Miller & Canby. Mr. Campbell focuses his practice on commercial disputes in state and federal courts in Maryland and Virginia and before arbitration panels. He handles cases relating to construction projects, real estate, leases/landlord-tenant, employment, breach of contract and other business and personal disputes. Mr. Campbell has resolved many disputes through mediation and private negotiation and successfully tried cases before judges, juries and arbitrators.
Mr. Campbell devotes a substantial portion of his practice to construction contract negotiation and construction disputes, both commercial and residential. Such disputes may involve mechanic’s lien actions, claims against payment or performance bonds, and claims between general contractors, owners and subcontractors. Mr. Campbell has taken numerous construction disputes through mediation and arbitration, including with the American Arbitration Association. Whether litigating or arbitrating a construction case, the client often requires the assistance of an expert witness. Mr. Campbell has relationships with experts in many different fields who can quickly analyze issues in dispute and provide expert testimony to support or oppose a claim.
APPELLATE CASES:
Successful defense of jury verdict in favor of client, a building owner, and against general contractor that performed shoddy repair work - Inrecon v. Kingward Kuo, Docket 2113, Term 2003 (Md. App. 2005) (unreported); Successful reversal of summary judgment in favor of Fairfax County employee driving fire truck that collided with client’s vehicle and caused serious injury – Julia Friday-Spivey v. Charles Collier, 268 Va. 384, 601 S.E.2d 591 (2004); Successful reversal of trial court decision, creating new law on liquidated damages – Barrie School v. Patch, 401 Md. 497 (2007).
EXPERIENCE:
Mr. Campbell joined Miller, Miller & Canby in 1997 and became an equity partner in the firm in 2005. Before joining the firm, he served as the judicial law clerk for the Honorable Paul A. McGuckian in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County. The year-long clerkship allowed Mr. Campbell to observe numerous trials by some of the county’s finest attorneys and he developed a keen understanding of the litigation process inside the courtroom. He also developed relationships with judges and courthouse staff that continue to serve his law practice today.

University of Virginia (B.A., 1991); University of Baltimore School of Law (J.D. cum laude, 1996; Manuscripts Editor, University of Baltimore Law Forum; American Jurisprudence Award for Constitutional Law). Mr. Campbell is admitted to practice before the Bars of Maryland and Virginia and the United States District Courts for the District of Maryland and the Eastern District of Virginia. He has a proficient oral and written knowledge of German.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Mr. Campbell is an active member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County (Executive Committee, 2000-2002) and the Maryland State and Virginia State Bar Associations. He is also an associate member of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Metropolitan Washington. Mr. Campbell serves annually as a judge in the Maryland high school mock trial competition. |
