Maury Epner co-chairs Miller, Miller & Canby’s Litigation Section. He is an experienced trial and appellate attorney who represents individuals, small businesses, and some of America’s largest multi-national corporations with equal vigor. Although he concentrates his practice on the trial and appeal of complex commercial disputes in the state and federal courts of Maryland, he has handled cases in a wide array of legal disciplines.
In recent years, for instance, Mr. Epner served as lead counsel for a large multi-national corporation in the defense of a complex commercial dispute in Maryland federal court, securing dismissal/summary judgment of the entire claim; successfully defended a Rockville software firm against a former executive’s employment-related claims; secured summary judgment for a small local business against a major regional media company; teamed with a major New York law firm to challenge a bio-technology patent in Maryland federal court; and persuaded federal prosecutors not to bring criminal charges against a local construction company executive. In 2007 and 2008 Super Lawyers magazine listed him as one of Maryland’s top 5% litigation attorneys. www.SuperLawyers.com
Over the course of his career, Mr. Epner has handled more than 100 appeals, appearing in Maryland’s state appellate courts as well as in federal appeals courts throughout the United States. He also has served as lead counsel in dozens of jury trials. He joined Miller, Miller & Canby in 1998 after 14 years as a federal prosecutor, first at the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. and later as an Assistant United States Attorney in Maryland.
Mr. Epner is a member of the Bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia. He graduated from Amherst College, with honors, in 1978, and from the Columbia University School of Law in 1981. Over the last decade, he has lectured at many continuing legal education programs, frequently on subjects relating to trial or appellate practice.
