For 30 years, Maury Epner has worked tirelessly to solve his clients’ most pressing legal problems, frequently—but by no means exclusively—in the courtroom. He has tried more than 50 cases to verdict and has handled well over 100 appeals, both in and outside Maryland, in state as well as federal court.  Mr. Epner represents all of his clients—individuals, small businesses, and some of America’s largest multi-national corporations—with the same mix of enthusiasm, zeal, and vigor.  He is a legal writer of uncommon skill.  And he is unfailingly clear, cogent, and candid with his clients.

While Mr. Epner is a former Maryland federal prosecutor, he has maintained an active civil litigation practice since leaving the government more than 12 years ago.  His experience is broad and deep, as reflected by the following representative matters:

  • Lead counsel for the General Electric Company and one of its subsidiaries in the successful defense of a complex commercial dispute in Maryland federal court, securing dismissal/summary judgment of the entire claim.
  • Successfully defended a Rockville software firm against a former executive’s employment-related claims.
  • Secured summary judgment on all claims for a privately held Montgomery County business against a major regional media company.
  • On behalf of MedImmune, Inc., teamed with a major New York law firm to litigate novel intellectual property claims in Maryland federal court and, later, to defeat a class-action suit filed in Maryland state court.
  • Favorably resolved a contentious business “divorce” for a highly successful Montgomery County commercial real estate entrepreneur.
  • Served as lead trial and appellate counsel for MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of silicon wafers for the consumer electronic and solar energy businesses, in contesting a $140 million breach of contract action brought by energy giant BP.
  • Obtained a $1 million fraud judgment (100% of demand) on behalf of a privately held Montgomery County government contractor against its former CFO.
  • Persuaded federal prosecutors not to bring criminal charges against a local construction company executive.

In addition, Mr. Epner has taught legal writing at the University of Maryland School of Law, has been recognized as one of Maryland’s top 5% of litigation attorneys by Super Lawyers Magazine, and has served on the Boards of Governors of the Maryland State and Federal Bar Associations, as well as on the Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Montgomery County. He has also devoted extensive time and effort in service to the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington and currently serves on his synagogue’s Board of Directors.
